It was all over the news a few days ago when a Russian man allegedly (I kinda like this word) killed himself. That was not the shocking part. The shocking part was that the guy streamed his suicide live on Skype, and lots of people watched yet none (or maybe 1 or 2 persons) tried to stop him.
As usual, I'll present some users reactions from Linda Ikeji Blog:
I also shared their anger. Then I stumbled across the comment below which got me thinking.
If you look at it very well, she's got a point. 1 point, 3 points, 5 points, I do not know; but she's got at least a point.
Her comment got me thinking about what I would have done if I were one of those watching the feed live. Maybe call the police? Hmmmmm.......... Below is what I think would have happened if I called the police
- I call police telling them them some guy in Russia wants to kill himself and he's broadcasting it on Skype
- police will most likely dismiss me as some lunatic. In the off chance that they believe me, they will pick me up for questioning/interrogation (more like t........)
- after the questioning, I'll confess to being the Russian, and from there, my case go tie wrapper
- your guess on what will happen after that is as good as mine.
So looking at it very closely, there is probably very little anyone watching the suicide from Nigeria could have done to stop it. But why person go spend him time and MB to watch suicide when e fit use that time look pictures of fine fine things (if you say babes, na you sabi) for Facebook?
I tire! This life sef!
